Sulley Muntari Criticizes Ghana Premier League, Calls It a "Mess"

Sulley Muntari, the former Black Stars midfielder, has raised concerns about the current state of the Ghana Premier League, describing it as disorganized and lacking a clear future. Having briefly returned to the domestic league during the 2021/22 season, Muntari, who previously played for Liberty Professionals before embarking on an illustrious European career, expressed his disappointment with the lack of progress in the league. During his time at Accra Hearts of Oak, Muntari contributed to the team’s victory in the President’s Cup and MTN FA Cup, but he ultimately chose not to renew his contract. In an interview with 3Sports, the 40-year-old former Inter Milan and AC Milan star shared his frustration over the league’s decline.

Muntari emphasized that the Ghana Premier League is, in his words, “a big hole where they are dumping money” and lacks the infrastructure and support needed to nurture the game. Despite his positive experiences with Hearts fans and the club's president, he criticized the overall situation in the league. Muntari expressed concern that unless substantial changes are made, there will be no future for Ghanaian football. He also pointed out the poor conditions within the league, including inadequate facilities such as smelly changing rooms that undermine the respect and professionalism expected in the sport. Muntari, who represented Ghana in three World Cups, hopes to secure funding to help improve the league's conditions.

Currently, the Ghana Premier League faces several challenges, including the absence of a headline sponsor and a lack of a broadcast rights holder, which has further hampered its development. Muntari’s comments reflect the growing frustration within the local football community regarding the league's inability to attract top players and sponsors. He believes that without external intervention and proper support, the situation will continue to deteriorate. His candid remarks serve as a wake-up call to all stakeholders involved in the Ghana Premier League to prioritize reforms that will secure a better future for the sport in the country.
