Mikel Arteta's Arsenal are poised to outmaneuver Manchester United and Manchester City in the race to sign highly-rated midfielder Sverre Nypan from Rosenborg. The 18-year-old has garnered comparisons to Arsenal's captain Martin Ødegaard due to his similar playing style, and Arteta looks set to secure his signature in what could be a major transfer coup.
In a twist of fate, Arsenal is about to lose another promising young talent to Manchester United, as the Red Devils close in on a January deal for 18-year-old defender Ayden Heaven. Arteta had previously singled out Heaven for praise following a standout performance in a pre-season friendly against United, calling it “remarkable.” Heaven now seems ready to follow striker Chido Obi-Martin, who moved to Old Trafford last summer after a prolific spell in Arsenal’s youth ranks. Despite the Gunners’ efforts to keep Obi-Martin with a new contract, the young striker chose United, drawn by a lucrative deal and what he perceived as a clearer pathway to first-team football.
Meanwhile, United had also been eyeing Nypan, alongside Manchester City, who recently had the teenager at the Etihad Stadium during their 3-1 victory over Chelsea. Aston Villa has also expressed interest, but Arsenal are believed to be leading the charge for the Norwegian talent. Nypan, who scored eight goals in 28 league appearances last season as Rosenborg finished fourth in Norway’s top division, has reportedly been assured by Arsenal that he would be integrated into the first-team squad immediately should he choose to join them. The transfer fee for Nypan is expected to be around £10 million, with additional add-ons.
The potential signing of Nypan could be influenced by the presence of Ødegaard, who has flourished under Arteta at Arsenal. The midfielder’s compatriot connection could prove crucial in Nypan's decision. Furthermore, the Gunners’ midfield is likely to undergo changes soon, with both Jorginho and Thomas Partey entering the final years of their contracts. Arsenal is also eyeing Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi, with a £51 million move rumored for the summer, signaling that the club is planning for future reinforcements in midfield.
In securing Nypan, Arteta could land another highly-rated prospect to strengthen Arsenal’s midfield and continue the club’s momentum in the transfer market.
