Who Leads The NDC In 2028? Four Names Revealed

As Ghana progresses under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, a lively debate has emerged on social media about who will take over the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2028 elections.

With Mahama currently in his second term, he is constitutionally required to leave office on January 7, 2028. This means the NDC must select a new candidate to represent the party in the next presidential race. Although it is still early to determine the final choice, several names have already been suggested as potential successors.

Here are four political figures who might compete for the NDC leadership after Mahama:

1. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa

Ablakwa has gained widespread recognition, particularly after his impressive performance during his vetting on Friday, January 31, 2025. Many expect him to be appointed as the Minister for Foreign Affairs. Over the years, he has built a strong reputation as a dedicated NDC member, and his recent public appearances have increased speculation that he could be a future leader of the party.

2. Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang

As Ghana’s current Vice President, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang holds a prominent position within the party. Having previously served as Minister of Education, she was also Mahama’s running mate in both the 2020 and 2024 elections. If she decides to run for the party’s presidential ticket, she will likely be a strong contender.

3. Johnson Asiedu Nketia

Commonly referred to as "General Mosquito," Asiedu Nketia is a seasoned politician and currently serves as the NDC’s National Chairman. With years of experience and a deep understanding of the party’s inner workings, he is seen as a possible candidate for leadership. However, some believe he may prefer to continue his role as a strategist rather than run for the presidency.

4. Haruna Iddrisu

Haruna Iddrisu is another influential figure within the NDC. Currently serving as Minister of Education and a long-time Member of Parliament, he has held various leadership positions in Parliament and is highly regarded for his governance expertise. His extensive experience and influence within the party could position him as a strong contender for the flagbearer role.

Although the 2028 NDC flagbearer race is still far off, discussions about potential candidates have already begun, setting the stage for an interesting political contest in the future.
