A Nigerian woman living in the United Kingdom, known as @shakels95, has shared her shocking experience of being arrested due to a misunderstanding involving Nigerian slang.

According to her, she had gone to a pharmacy to pick up medication for her husband when an innocent comment during a phone conversation led to her unexpected arrest. While speaking with her husband, she casually referred to the medication as “drugs” instead of using the term “medications,” unaware that the people nearby at the pharmacy misunderstood her.

Shortly after, the police arrived and took her into custody.

In a TikTok video, she recounted the incident: “I got arrested last night and detained. Now I’m going home. Let me tell you the story. So yesterday, I went to the pharmacy to get some drugs for my husband.

“Then, when I finished, I was on the phone and said, ‘Ah, I got the drugs, I got two drugs for you. When you use them, you’ll feel better.’

“Without knowing, people nearby heard me say ‘drugs, drugs, drugs,’ but I wasn’t worried because I didn’t think I’d done anything wrong. The next thing I knew, the police showed up. They asked me, ‘We heard there are drugs here.’

“I said, ‘What drugs? This is what I meant by drugs,’” she said, holding up the medications she had purchased—Ibuprofen for her husband, who wasn’t feeling well.

Despite her explanation, the police didn’t take her word for it. She explained that they detained her at the station and even searched her home to investigate their suspicions.

“They took me to the police station, detained me, and asked me more questions…” she added.
