On January 28, 2025, the Miss Côte d'Ivoire pageant made a historic announcement: it will ban wigs and weaves, to celebrate and promote natural beauty.
The move aims to encourage contestants to embrace their authentic selves by showcasing their natural hair, whether it’s long, short, braided, or shaved. This decision marks a significant shift towards empowering women to feel confident without relying on artificial enhancements.
This policy is groundbreaking, as it is the first time a national beauty pageant has prohibited the use of wigs and weaves. The organizing committee emphasized that the change is meant to highlight natural African beauty and authenticity.
Victor Yapobi, the president of the organizing committee, cited past Miss Universe contestants who won with short natural hair as an example of the beauty of simplicity and authenticity.
Côte d'Ivoire becomes the first country to implement such a policy in its national pageant. The decision was also influenced by Marlene Kouassi, who won Miss Côte d'Ivoire 2022 while sporting short hair.
The new rule has sparked mixed reactions: some view it as a step toward setting independent standards in Africa, while others see it as a means of suppressing black women’s freedom of choice.
Other changes to the pageant include a slight adjustment in the minimum height requirement, now 1.67 meters instead of 1.68 meters, and an increase in the age limit from 25 to 28 years.
The crowning of Miss Côte d'Ivoire 2025 will take place on June 26, 2025.
