On Friday, the International Criminal Court (ICC) responded strongly after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed sanctions on the institution, asserting its commitment to continuing its mission of delivering "justice and hope" globally.
“The ICC condemns the U.S. Executive Order imposing sanctions on its officials, which seeks to undermine the Court’s independent and impartial judicial work,” the ICC said in a statement.
“The Court stands resolutely behind its staff and reaffirms its dedication to providing justice and hope for millions of innocent victims of atrocities worldwide,” the statement continued, emphasizing its role as a global pillar for justice.
Trump's sanctions on Thursday targeted the ICC, accusing it of conducting "illegitimate and baseless" investigations into the U.S. and its ally, Israel. The U.S. measures included asset freezes and travel bans for ICC officials, staff, their families, and anyone assisting the Court's investigations. Specific names were not disclosed, but previous U.S. sanctions under Trump had already targeted the ICC's prosecutor.
The ICC concluded its statement by urging its 125 member states, civil society, and the global community to stand together in support of justice and fundamental human rights.
