Asante Kotoko Withdraws from MTN FA Cup Round of 16 Amid Tragedy

The Round of 16 matches in the MTN FA Cup are set to proceed as scheduled, but without Asante Kotoko. This confirmation came from Wilson Arthur, Chairman of the MTN FA Cup Committee. The Porcupine Warriors, despite resuming training, have decided to abstain from official competitions due to the unresolved circumstances surrounding the tragic death of their supporter, Francis Frimpong, popularly known as Nana Pooley. The unfortunate incident occurred at Nana Kronmansah Park during Kotoko’s Matchday 19 fixture against Nsoatreman FC, where Pooley was fatally attacked. This led to the indefinite suspension of the Ghana Premier League as authorities investigated the matter. Kotoko has since maintained that they will not participate in any competitive games until justice is served for their late fan.

Despite Kotoko’s absence, the MTN FA Cup will continue without disruption, as Wilson Arthur assured during an interview on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show. He reiterated that the tournament would move forward across various venues as planned, though Kotoko’s fixture would be rescheduled for a later date. Arthur acknowledged the team’s decision and confirmed that Kotoko resumed training, but their official involvement in the competition remains on hold. Originally, the Kumasi-based club was set to play against Sekondi Eleven Wise at the Baba Yara Stadium. However, with their stance on the matter still firm, the FA Cup organizers have opted to adjust their schedule accordingly. This situation has sparked discussions within the football community, as many sympathize with Kotoko’s position while also considering the implications for the tournament.

The tragic loss of Nana Pooley has not only impacted Kotoko but has also drawn attention to issues of security and violence in Ghanaian football. In response, Bechem United has placed a GHC100,000 bounty on the suspect linked to Pooley’s death, signaling a collective effort to bring justice to the matter. Meanwhile, Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku has called for reforms in match officiating and security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. As the FA Cup continues, it remains uncertain when Asante Kotoko will return to active competition, with their management and supporters prioritizing justice over immediate participation. The case serves as a reminder of the need for stricter regulations and safety measures in Ghanaian football to protect fans and players alike.
