Former Nigerian international John Obi Mikel has called on English football pundit Jamie Carragher to apologize to Africans for his recent comments about the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The controversy arose after Carragher made remarks that many perceived as dismissive of the tournament’s significance, leading to backlash from African footballers and fans alike.
Jamie Carragher, a former Liverpool defender and current football analyst, sparked outrage when he appeared to downplay AFCON’s importance in global football. In a discussion about international tournaments, Carragher reportedly questioned the timing of AFCON and suggested that European clubs suffer due to the mid-season departure of their African players.
His remarks triggered strong reactions from African players, who believe that AFCON deserves the same respect as the UEFA European Championship or Copa América. Many saw his comments as reflective of a broader lack of recognition for African football on the global stage.
John Obi Mikel, a former Chelsea midfielder who represented Nigeria in multiple AFCON tournaments, did not hold back in his criticism of Carragher. In an interview, Mikel stated that Carragher’s comments were disrespectful to African footballers, the rich history of AFCON, and the millions of fans who passionately follow the tournament.
“AFCON is a prestigious tournament with a long history. African players give their all for their countries just as Europeans do in the Euros. To downplay its importance is an insult, and Jamie Carragher should apologize,” Mikel said.
Mikel also highlighted the hypocrisy in Carragher’s stance, noting that European clubs have no problem benefiting from African talents but often show reluctance in supporting their international commitments. “Clubs in Europe happily sign African players because of their quality, but when it’s time for them to represent their countries, there is always an issue,” he added.
AFCON is Africa’s premier international football tournament, dating back to 1957. It has produced some of the most iconic moments in world football and showcased the talents of legendary players such as Samuel Eto’o, Didier Drogba, and Jay-Jay Okocha. The tournament attracts millions of viewers worldwide, and its impact extends beyond just football—driving economic activity, national pride, and unity across the continent.
Mikel Obi emphasized that dismissing AFCON’s importance is an outdated and Eurocentric view. “Football is global. Just because AFCON doesn’t happen in Europe doesn’t mean it is less important. It’s about time people in the football world respect all continents equally,” he stated.
Mikel Obi is not the only African star who has expressed frustration with the way AFCON is perceived. Over the years, many African players, including Sadio Mané, Mohamed Salah, and Riyad Mahrez, have spoken out against the double standards in international football.
Mané, who won AFCON with Senegal in 2022, previously said, “When I play for Liverpool, I am loved, but when I go to play for Senegal, I face criticism. People need to understand how much AFCON means to us.”
Similarly, Ghanaian legend Asamoah Gyan has urged European football stakeholders to show more respect for African football. “AFCON is not a small tournament. We fight, we train hard, and we play with passion. It is an honor to represent our countries,” Gyan stated.
Mikel Obi and other African footballers believe that Jamie Carragher should issue a formal apology for his remarks. They argue that such comments perpetuate harmful stereotypes about African football and undermine the achievements of players who have excelled both in club and international football.
“Apologizing would show that he understands why his comments were offensive. It’s not just about AFCON—it’s about respect for African football as a whole,” Mikel concluded.
Carragher has yet to respond publicly to the growing calls for an apology. However, as pressure mounts, football fans and analysts will be watching closely to see how he addresses the situation.
