Manchester United and Real Sociedad Play Out 1-1 Draw in Europa League First Leg

Manchester United and Real Sociedad played to a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League last-16 tie in San Sebastian, setting up a decisive second-leg clash at Old Trafford. United, aiming to overcome their inconsistent home form, had opportunities to take control of the match early on. However, missed chances defined the first half, with Diogo Dalot failing to set up Rasmus Højlund for what could have been a simple finish. Additionally, Bruno Fernandes and Joshua Zirkzee both saw their goal-bound efforts cleared off the line by Sociedad defender Aritz Elustondo. Despite the wasted opportunities, United showed renewed determination after the break and finally broke the deadlock when Alejandro Garnacho delivered a well-timed cutback to Zirkzee, who converted with a precise first-time strike.

Sociedad had struggled to trouble United goalkeeper André Onana, but the match took a dramatic turn in the 70th minute when VAR intervened to award the Spanish side a penalty. A review determined that Fernandes had handled the ball during a corner kick, leading to Mikel Oyarzabal confidently converting from the spot to bring the hosts level. The equalizer shifted momentum in Sociedad’s favor, and they nearly snatched a late winner. Substitute Orri Oskarsson had two golden chances—first firing wide from close range and later forcing an excellent save from Onana in stoppage time. Despite Sociedad’s late pressure, United managed to hold on for the draw, leaving the tie finely balanced heading into the return leg.

With everything to play for in the second leg at Old Trafford, Manchester United must find a way to capitalize on home advantage and improve their finishing. While their attacking intent was evident, defensive lapses and missed opportunities could prove costly if not addressed. Sociedad, on the other hand, will take confidence from their late resurgence and look to exploit any weaknesses in United’s backline. The decisive clash will determine which side advances to the quarter-finals, with both teams eager to keep their European ambitions and live.
