The world has made remarkable progress in disease elimination, with 44 eliminations confirmed by the WHO in just the last five years. Malaria, for example, has been eradicated in 45 countries thanks to effective public health tools and strategies. Looking ahead, global health experts are optimistic about eliminating 32 more diseases within the next decade. Achieving disease elimination requires a combination of strong political will, technical support from the WHO, and rigorous disease surveillance. A One Health approach, which considers human, animal, and environmental health together, is also crucial in tackling zoonotic diseases. In addition, active involvement from communities, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and individuals with lived experiences ensures that public health interventions are effective and sustainable. By combining these efforts, countries can successfully eliminate diseases as public health threats.

Eliminating diseases requires a well-coordinated and sustained effort at multiple levels. Governments must commit to funding and implementing health programs, while the WHO provides technical guidance and oversight. Disease surveillance systems help track progress and detect any resurgence, ensuring timely interventions. Community engagement plays a vital role in raising awareness, promoting preventive measures, and ensuring public trust in health initiatives. NGOs also contribute by filling gaps in resources, advocacy, and on-the-ground support. Importantly, those affected by these diseases can share their experiences to shape policies and interventions that are both practical and impactful. Access to medical tools, vaccines, and treatments is another critical factor, ensuring that no one is left behind in the fight against preventable diseases.

Individuals can also contribute to disease elimination in meaningful ways. Developing a global mindset—understanding that diseases do not recognize borders—helps create solidarity in tackling health threats worldwide. Advocating for governments to prioritize global health initiatives can push for stronger commitments and funding. Spreading awareness by sharing information and educating others encourages collective action, which is essential for sustaining progress. With the world more interconnected than ever, everyone has a role to play in eliminating diseases and protecting public health. By working together, we can create a future where more diseases are eliminated, and global health is strengthened for generations to come.
