Liverpool took a huge step toward securing the Premier League title after coming from behind to defeat Southampton 3-1 at Anfield. The visitors shocked the Reds early on when Will Smallbone capitalized on a defensive miscommunication between Virgil van Dijk and Alisson to put Southampton ahead. Liverpool, visibly fatigued from their midweek Champions League win over Paris Saint-Germain, struggled to find rhythm in the first half. However, manager Arne Slot’s tactical changes at halftime revitalized the team. Darwin Núñez, who had an underwhelming first half, made an instant impact after the break by converting Luis Díaz’s cutback to level the score. The home fans, sensing a shift in momentum, grew louder as Liverpool pressed forward in search of the winning goal.

The breakthrough arrived when Núñez was fouled inside the box by Smallbone, handing Liverpool a penalty. Mohamed Salah confidently stepped up and dispatched the spot-kick, putting the hosts ahead. This goal ignited the Anfield crowd, who began chanting their belief that the title was within reach. Southampton, already at the bottom of the league standings, struggled to respond as Liverpool dominated possession. The visitors’ misery was compounded when the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) spotted a handball by Yukinari Sugawara, leading to another penalty. Salah made no mistake from the spot, sealing the victory and taking his goal tally for the season to 27. With this win, Liverpool extended their lead at the top to 16 points, making it almost impossible for second-placed Arsenal, who have two games in hand, to catch them.

This result leaves Southampton in a precarious position, with the threat of recording the lowest points total in Premier League history looming over them. Meanwhile, Liverpool’s relentless pursuit of the title continues, with their fans now fully convinced that they will be crowned champions. Both sides utilized their full substitution allowances, with Southampton forced into an early change after losing captain Jan Bednarek to a head injury. The match showcased Liverpool’s resilience, proving their ability to grind out results even when not at their best. With just a few games remaining in the season, Arne Slot’s men are now within touching distance of bringing the Premier League trophy back to Anfield.
