The Ghana Nurse-Midwives Trainees Association (GNMTA) has expressed its appreciation to the government for continuing the Nursing and Midwifery Training Allowance, as announced in the latest national budget. The government has allocated GH₵480 million to sustain this financial support, which the association considers a crucial intervention to ease the financial burden on trainees. GNMTA acknowledged that this initiative not only helps students focus on their studies but also highlights the government’s recognition of the vital role nurses and midwives play in healthcare. While welcoming this support, the association emphasized that the increasing cost of nursing and midwifery education is becoming a barrier for many, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds. It, therefore, urged the government to review and regulate the rising fees to ensure that all qualified individuals have the opportunity to pursue careers in these essential professions.

In addition to concerns about training costs, GNMTA called on the government to address the growing unemployment among nurses and midwives who completed their training in 2021 and 2022. Despite fulfilling their one-year mandatory national service, many of these trained professionals remain jobless. The association stressed the urgency of integrating them into the healthcare system to help meet the country’s increasing health needs. Given the growing demand for quality healthcare services, GNMTA believes that employing these trained professionals will not only improve service delivery but also justify the government’s investment in their education and training. The association urged policymakers to take swift action in ensuring that these professionals are absorbed into the workforce, thereby strengthening the healthcare sector and reducing the human resource gap in hospitals and clinics across the country.

GNMTA reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for policies that advance the welfare of nurse and midwife trainees. The association emphasized the importance of ongoing collaboration with the government and other stakeholders to enhance healthcare training and employment opportunities. It expressed hope that through constructive dialogue and mutual understanding, lasting solutions could be found for the challenges facing the nursing and midwifery professions in Ghana. GNMTA remains dedicated to ensuring that aspiring and trained healthcare professionals receive the necessary support to contribute effectively to national healthcare development. By addressing the issues of rising training costs and unemployment, the association believes that Ghana can build a stronger, more resilient healthcare system that benefits both professionals and the public.
