Iran’s Retaliatory Strike on Israel and Global Reactions

Iran launched a large-scale missile and drone attack on Israel late Saturday, escalating tensions in the Middle East. This move was in direct response to an Israeli airstrike on April 1 that targeted an Iranian diplomatic compound in Syria, resulting in the deaths of senior officials from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The Iranian assault involved over 300 projectiles, including ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones, making it Tehran’s first full-scale attack on Israel. However, nearly all of them were intercepted by Israel’s defense system, with assistance from allied nations such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Jordan, and France. Despite the successful defense, some missiles breached Israeli territory, damaging a military base and seriously injuring a young girl. Global leaders, including U.S. President Joe Biden and the heads of Germany, Canada, and Britain, condemned Iran’s actions, emphasizing the risk of further destabilization in the region. In response, Israel's war cabinet convened to deliberate on its next course of action, while the United Nations Security Council prepared to discuss the conflict at Israel’s request.

Iran justified its attack as an act of retaliation for the Israeli strike on its diplomatic facility in Damascus, which it regarded as a breach of international norms. The attack on the consular building led to the deaths of key IRGC figures, including Mohammad Reza Zahedi and Brig. Gen. Mohammad Hadi Haj Rahimi. Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, had vowed to avenge the strike, framing Saturday’s assault as a necessary response. Hamas, a longtime ally of Iran, supported Tehran’s actions, arguing that they were a justified reaction to Israel’s continued military operations in the region. Meanwhile, the Houthi rebels in Yemen, another Iranian ally, congratulated Iran on the attack but downplayed their own involvement. Israeli military officials identified multiple launch points for the Iranian strike, including sites in Lebanon, Iraq, and Yemen, signaling a coordinated offensive. Iranian officials claimed their operation was highly effective and warned that any retaliation from Israel would result in an even more severe response.

The hostilities between Iran and Israel are not new but rather part of a prolonged shadow war that has played out through assassinations, cyberattacks, and military strikes over the years. Iran has long supported militant groups like Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen, who have launched attacks against Israel and its allies. Israel, on the other hand, has frequently targeted Iranian military assets in Syria to counter Tehran’s influence in the region. Tensions escalated further in December when Israel was accused of assassinating Brig. Gen. Sayyed Razi Mousavi, a top IRGC adviser, in Syria. Iran has also accused Israel of attempting to sabotage its nuclear program, with incidents such as the 2021 electrical blackout at an Iranian nuclear facility and past cyberattacks on its infrastructure. As the situation unfolds, global powers fear that the latest exchange could spiral into a broader regional conflict, with devastating consequences for stability in the Middle East.
