Teddy Osei, who passed away at 88 on January 14, 2025, was a pioneer in Ghana’s music industry. Born in Kumasi, he was introduced to musical instruments at an early age and developed a passion for the saxophone while attempting to form a band with his college friends in Sekondi. After completing college, he briefly worked as a building inspector before pursuing his love for music. He founded “The Comets,” a band that gained some recognition before he moved to London in 1962 on a Ghanaian government grant to study at a private music and drama school. However, political changes in Ghana cut his studies short.
In 1969, he formed Osibisa, a band that revolutionized the global music scene with its Afro-rock fusion. The group gained international fame in the 1970s, producing hit songs and performing across the world. Though the band’s popularity later declined, it remained an influential force in music. Osei’s contributions to African and global music continue to be celebrated, and his legacy as a pioneer of Afro-rock will live on. His passing marks the end of an era, but his music will forever resonate with fans and future generations.
