Thomas Partey Unfazed by Black Stars Captaincy Snub – GFA

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has dismissed concerns over Thomas Partey’s reaction to losing the Black Stars captaincy, stating that the Arsenal midfielder remains committed to the national team. Ahead of Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar, the GFA confirmed Jordan Ayew as the new team captain. This announcement raised eyebrows among fans and analysts, with many questioning whether Partey was disappointed by the decision. However, GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum reassured supporters that Partey harbors no ill feelings. Speaking to Sporty FM, Twum emphasized that the change was made in the best interest of the team and had no impact on Partey’s dedication to Ghana’s success.

Partey, who has been a key figure for the Black Stars, previously served as the deputy captain and stepped up to lead the team in the absence of long-time captain Andre Ayew. His leadership on and off the pitch has been instrumental in Ghana’s recent campaigns, but the GFA’s decision signals a shift toward new leadership within the squad. Twum stated that Partey understands the decision and remains focused on contributing to the team’s goals. He added that the Black Stars’ leadership structure is not about personal ambition but about fostering unity and success.

Ghana is currently second in Group I with nine points, tied with Comoros at the top of the standings. The upcoming qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar are crucial for the team’s World Cup qualification hopes. The Black Stars will host Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium on March 21 before traveling to Morocco for their clash against Madagascar. With the stakes high, the GFA has urged fans to rally behind the team and focus on their collective mission rather than individual leadership changes.

Despite the discussions surrounding the captaincy, Partey’s experience and influence remain invaluable to the squad. As one of the most accomplished Ghanaian footballers playing in Europe, his presence in midfield provides stability and vision. His performances for Arsenal in the English Premier League have made him a role model for younger players aspiring to represent Ghana at the highest level. Many believe that while he may no longer wear the captain’s armband, his leadership will still be felt on and off the field.

The decision to appoint Jordan Ayew as captain comes at a time when Ghana is restructuring its squad following disappointing performances in recent international tournaments. The Black Stars failed to progress beyond the group stage in the last three major tournaments and did not qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). These setbacks have prompted calls for a fresh approach to team management and player selection. Ayew, who has been with the national team for over a decade, brings experience and resilience to his new role as captain.

As Ghana prepares for the World Cup qualifiers, the leadership transition will be closely watched. However, the GFA remains confident that the team will remain united and focused. With Partey’s unwavering commitment and Ayew’s leadership, the Black Stars aim to secure crucial victories and strengthen their bid for a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
