Tragedy has struck the football world as Guo Jiaxuan, a promising 18-year-old defender and former Bayern Munich youth star, has passed away after suffering a devastating head injury during a training session in February. The incident occurred during a training camp organized by the Beijing Football Association, where Guo was participating in a training match against Spanish side RC Alcobendas.
According to his brother, Guo was struck in the face by a knee during the match, resulting in a subarachnoid hemorrhage, a type of stroke caused by bleeding on the brain. Doctors in Madrid subsequently diagnosed Guo with "brain death," a devastating blow to his family and loved ones.
Guo's last club, Beijing Guoan, announced the tragic news with a heartfelt tribute, saying, "We have lost a child who loved football. May Jiaxuan rest in peace!" The club vowed to provide support to Guo's family, stating, "The club will continue to do its utmost to deal with the consequences appropriately and provide all necessary help and support to Guo Jiaxuan's family."
In the aftermath of the incident, Guo's family faced a harrowing ordeal. His father reportedly refused the doctor's suggestion to turn off his son's life support and perform an autopsy, instead seeking to repatriate Guo to China for further treatment. However, the family accused the Beijing Football Association and Beijing Guoan of failing to cover Guo's medical bills, claiming that the Beijing FA had neglected to purchase insurance for the trip.
The South China Morning Post reported that the Beijing FA eventually reached an agreement to transport Guo to China, where he tragically succumbed to his brain injury. The incident has raised concerns about the safety and welfare of young footballers, as well as the responsibility of clubs and organizations to provide adequate support and care in the event of a tragedy.
