Mfantsiman Girls’ SHS Robotics Team Builds a Delivery Drone – Proud of Them!


In a world where technology is rapidly evolving, young minds are stepping up to shape the future. One such inspiring story comes from the Mfantsiman Girls’ Senior High School (SHS) robotics team, who have successfully built a functional delivery drone. This incredible achievement not only showcases their talent but also proves that with the right support and determination, young girls can excel in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).  


The Journey of the Mfantsiman Girls’ Robotics Team  

The Mfantsiman Girls’ SHS robotics team is not new to innovation. Over the years, they have participated in several competitions, demonstrating their problem-solving skills and creativity. However, their latest project—a delivery drone—has taken their accomplishments to new heights (literally!).  


Why a Delivery Drone? 

The team identified a real-world problem: inefficient delivery systems in remote areas. Many communities in Ghana struggle with getting essential supplies like medicine, food, and small packages due to poor road networks. The students saw an opportunity to use drone technology to provide a faster, more efficient solution. 

How They Built the Drone  

Building a drone from scratch is no small feat, especially for high school students. Here’s a breakdown of their process:  

1. Research & Planning

 - The team studied existing drone models. 

 - They consulted online resources and reached out to engineers for guidance.  


 - They designed a lightweight yet durable frame to carry small packages.  


2. Gathering Materials 


  - Using locally sourced and affordable parts, they assembled:  

   - A quadcopter frame  

   - Brushless motors  

   - Electronic speed controllers (ESCs)  


   - A flight controller  

     - A lithium-polymer (LiPo) battery  

    - A GPS module for navigation  


3. Programming & Testing 


- They coded the drone’s flight path using open-source software.  


  - Conducted multiple test flights to ensure stability and safety.  


   - Adjusted weight distribution to optimize payload capacity.  


4. Final Product 


- The drone can carry small packages (up to 1kg).  


 - It has a flight range of about 5 kilometers.  


  - It includes a manual override feature for emergency control.  


Challenges Faced (And How They Overcame Them)  

Like any ambitious project, the team encountered obstacles:  

- Limited Funding – Drones can be expensive, but the team used cost-effective alternatives.  


- Technical Failures – Some early prototypes crashed, but they learned from each mistake.  


- Skepticism – Some doubted that high school girls could build a functioning drone, but they proved them wrong.  


Through persistence, teamwork, and mentorship from their teachers, they turned these challenges into stepping stones.  


Why This Achievement Matters

The Mfantsiman Girls’ SHS robotics team isn’t stopping here. They have big plans:

They also hope to compete in international robotics competitions to showcase Ghanaian talent on a global stage.
