Remembering Maame Dwomoh: A Family's Tribute on Her 13th Birthday


In a poignant commemoration, the family of Maame Dwomoh gathered at her gravesite to honor what would have been her 13th birthday. This solemn occasion served as a heartfelt remembrance of a young life tragically cut short in a devastating accident in East Legon, Accra.

The Tragic Incident That Shook East Legon

On October 12, 2024, the East Legon community was struck by tragedy when a fatal car accident claimed the lives of 12-year-old Maame Dwomoh and her friend, Justine Agbenu. The two girls, both students at Cornerstone International Academy, were involved in a collision caused by 16-year-old Elrad Salifu Amoako, who lost control of a Jaguar SUV and collided with another vehicle. The impact resulted in both vehicles catching fire, leading to the untimely deaths of Maame and Justine.


A Community United in Mourning

In the aftermath of the accident, the East Legon community came together to mourn the loss of these young lives. An all-white candlelight vigil was held at the site of the accident, where family members, friends, and community members gathered to pay their respects. The vigil was marked by heartfelt tributes, prayers, and moments of silent reflection, highlighting the profound impact Maame and Justine had on those around them.

Private Burials and Lasting Memories

Both girls were laid to rest in private ceremonies attended by close family and friends. Maame Dwomoh was buried on October 19, 2024, followed by Justine Agbenu on October 23, 2024. In a testament to their close friendship, Justine was laid to rest beside Maame, symbolizing their inseparable bond even in death.

Seeking Justice and Stricter Laws

The tragic loss of Maame and Justine sparked calls for stricter traffic laws and accountability. The families of the deceased advocated for legal reforms to prevent similar incidents in the future. The juvenile court sentenced Elrad Salifu Amoako to six months at the Senior Correctional Center for manslaughter. Additionally, his parents were fined GH₵12,000 for their role in allowing him to drive without a valid license.
