Bernardo Silva Dismisses Claims That Manchester City Squad Is “Too Old”

Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva has strongly rejected the suggestion that Pep Guardiola’s squad is too old to compete at the highest level. The Portuguese playmaker was visibly frustrated by claims that City’s recent struggles stem from an aging squad, arguing that such opinions come from people who do not truly understand football.

When asked about concerns regarding the team’s age, Silva immediately challenged the premise of the question. “Tell me, which player? Give me names,” he demanded. “That’s people that don’t understand the game.” His response made it clear that he believes the criticism is both unfair and unfounded.

Silva, who recently turned 30, pointed out that he and teammate Mateo Kovačić, also 30, are far from being considered too old in footballing terms. “I’m 30, Kovačić is 30. You’re not talking about guys that are 36,” he said, implying that experience and maturity should be seen as assets rather than liabilities.

Manchester City has dominated English football under Guardiola, winning six Premier League titles in the last eight seasons. However, they have experienced a slight dip in form over the past few months, leading some pundits to question whether an aging squad is beginning to decline. Silva strongly disagrees with this narrative, highlighting the team’s recent success.

“We have six or four bad months, and out of nowhere we’re old, not good enough?” Silva asked rhetorically. “In the last eight seasons, we’ve won six Premier Leagues, and for four bad months we’re old? I’m asking you. You asked me the question, so I answered.”

His passionate response underscores his belief that such criticism lacks perspective. While City has faced challenges this season, including injuries and fluctuating form, Silva sees no reason to believe the squad is past its prime.

Silva also took a swipe at those making such claims, suggesting they lack true football knowledge. “That’s people that don’t understand the game, never played the game, and probably don’t understand a thing about football,” he stated bluntly.

His comments reflect the mentality that has made Manchester City so dominant in recent years. The club has consistently proven its doubters wrong, and Silva is confident they will do so again. Despite the criticism, City remains in contention for major trophies, and Silva's words suggest a squad determined to silence its critics once more.
