Interior Minister Orders Police Crackdown on Notorious Kumasi Drug Den ‘Tinker Island’

In a decisive move to address the growing issue of drug trafficking and abuse in Kumasi, Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak has issued a directive to the Ashanti Regional Police Command, calling for immediate and aggressive action against “Tinker Island”—a location widely recognized as one of the city’s most infamous drug hotspots.

“Tinker Island,” located within the Kumasi metropolis, has long been associated with illegal drug trade and consumption. Over time, it has become a gathering point for both drug dealers and users, earning a notorious reputation as a center for illicit narcotics activity. The area’s widespread criminal activity has raised serious concerns among residents, community leaders, and law enforcement agencies alike.

Speaking during a meeting with the Ashanti Regional Police Command, the Interior Minister expressed grave concern over the unchecked operations taking place at Tinker Island. He described the den as a significant contributor to the escalating rate of drug-related crimes and violence across the region. According to him, the open and brazen manner in which illegal drug activities are carried out at the site signals a breakdown in local enforcement and poses a major threat to public safety.

Minister Mubarak emphasized the urgency of the situation, pointing out that despite previous efforts, the location remains active and continues to serve as a hub for the drug trade. Reports indicate that the sale and abuse of drugs occur openly, with little resistance from law enforcement, allowing the criminal network to flourish.

In response to this persistent issue, the Interior Minister has given the Ashanti Regional Police Command a clear mandate: dismantle the operations at Tinker Island within the next six months. He made it clear that the government will no longer tolerate the continued existence of such criminal enclaves, especially those that openly defy national drug laws and contribute to deteriorating security conditions in the region.

Minister Mubarak also condemned past efforts to shut down the drug den, calling them inadequate and ineffective. He stressed that any future operations must be thorough, coordinated, and sustained to ensure that once cleared, the location does not resume its criminal activities. He encouraged the police to not only focus on arrests but to work with other relevant agencies to rehabilitate the area and prevent a resurgence of drug activity.

The directive forms part of a broader national strategy to combat drug abuse and trafficking in Ghana. It reflects the government’s commitment to restoring law and order, particularly in urban centers where drug-related crimes have been on the rise. Community members and anti-drug advocates have welcomed the move, expressing hope that this renewed focus will bring lasting change to Kumasi.

As the deadline approaches, the eyes of the public will be on the Ashanti Regional Police Command to see whether they can fulfill the Interior Minister’s mandate and bring an end to the longstanding operations at Tinker Island.
