Eastern Regional Hospital's Plea: A Call to Action for Resuming Construction in Koforidua

The Eastern Regional Hospital in Koforidua, a pivotal healthcare institution in Ghana's Eastern Region, has recently voiced a pressing appeal to the government: to recommence the stalled construction of its new facility. This development is not just a matter of infrastructure but a critical step toward enhancing healthcare delivery in the region.

Background: The Vision for a Modern Healthcare Facility

In July 2020, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo initiated the construction of a state-of-the-art regional hospital in Koforidua. The project, with a budget of €70 million secured from Standard Chartered Bank, UK, and supported by a €7.92 million credit guarantee from the UK Export Finance (UKEF), aimed to establish a 285-bed facility in its first phase, expandable to 600 beds. The envisioned hospital was set to offer comprehensive medical services, including emergency care, maternity, intensive care, and specialized surgeries.

Current Status: Construction Halted

Despite the initial momentum, the project has encountered significant delays. Reports indicate that contractors, Ellipse Projects and Trillium, abandoned the site due to non-payment issues. Subcontractors responsible for essential tasks like electrical installations and plastering have also ceased operations, leading to layoffs and a standstill in construction activities.

Hospital Management's Appeal

Dr. Akro Akoto Ampaw, the Medical Superintendent of the Eastern Regional Hospital, has publicly appealed to the government to address these challenges. He emphasized the project's importance, stating, "We ask that work begins so that we can deliver quality healthcare, as a mark of what we have always had in the Eastern Regional Hospital."

Community and Regional Implications

The halt in construction has broader implications for the community and the region. The existing hospital facilities are under strain, and the anticipated benefits of the new hospital, such as improved acute care and support for primary healthcare facilities, remain unrealized. The delay also affects the region's preparedness to handle public health challenges effectively.

A Call to Action

The completion of the new Eastern Regional Hospital is not merely a construction project; it's a vital investment in the health and well-being of the people in the Eastern Region and beyond. The government's intervention to resolve financial impediments and resume construction is crucial. Ensuring the project's completion will fulfill a significant healthcare promise and demonstrate a commitment to improving Ghana's healthcare infrastructure.

In conclusion, the resumption and completion of the Eastern Regional Hospital's construction are imperative. It stands as a beacon of hope for enhanced healthcare delivery, and all stakeholders must collaborate to bring this vision to fruition.
