Defence Minister Reaffirms Government’s Resolve in Galamsey Fight

Ghana’s Minister for Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, has restated the government’s strong commitment to ending illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey. According to him, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have been fully empowered and are operating with the necessary political support to confront this national threat head-on.

His comments come in the wake of a major military operation in the Western Region, where a hidden galamsey settlement accommodating over 10,000 people was discovered and dismantled. In a Facebook post on Wednesday, April 16, Dr Boamah emphasized that the time for empty talk is over. He highlighted that the government’s new approach will be driven by action and measurable outcomes, not rhetoric.

“We’ll talk less and let action and outcomes guide us,” he stated, signaling a shift from lengthy public discussions to active enforcement. The Minister made it clear that the fight against illegal mining will now be defined by tangible results.

In a heartfelt appeal, Dr Boamah urged individuals involved in illegal mining to vacate protected areas immediately. Speaking both as a public official and a concerned Ghanaian, he called on them to consider the devastating impact of their activities on the environment and future generations. “Once again, in the name of God and Ghana, leave the forest reserves and water bodies. Save your lives. Save the environment,” he pleaded.

He further assured the public that the military is not only equipped but also has the full political mandate to take necessary actions. “The Ghana Armed Forces has been empowered. We have the needed political will,” he said, reiterating the administration’s resolve to protect Ghana’s natural resources.

Dr Boamah’s remarks reflect a tougher stance on illegal mining, a challenge that has severely affected Ghana’s water bodies, forests, and communities over the years. The renewed focus on empowering the military and reducing public commentary indicates a more strategic and forceful approach to tackling the galamsey menace.

With operations already underway and significant progress being made, the government hopes this renewed effort will bring sustainable change. The Defence Minister’s statement reinforces that protecting the environment is now a top priority, and illegal miners must take heed or face decisive action from the state.
