The vibrant city of Accra will soon transform into a center of regional pride as it hosts the launch of ECOWAS’s Golden Jubilee celebrations on Tuesday, April 22, 2025. In what promises to be a monumental event, President John Dramani Mahama will officially kick off the 50th anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), marking a significant moment in the organization’s history and Africa’s journey toward unity and integration.

The Golden Jubilee launch will not only spotlight Ghana as a central figure in regional diplomacy but will also attract high-profile attendees from all fifteen ECOWAS Member States. Ministers, dignitaries, and leaders from across West Africa are expected to converge in Accra to witness a celebration that captures five decades of collective progress, resilience, and development.

The city of Accra is already gearing up for this landmark occasion, which will feature a vibrant display of performances and cultural exhibitions. From colorful artistic showcases to the official unveiling of the ECOWAS 50th Anniversary logo and theme, the event aims to celebrate both history and the future of the regional bloc. A narrative journey through the birth of ECOWAS in Lagos on May 28, 1975, to its present-day impact across the subregion will take center stage.

This Golden Jubilee isn't just about celebration—it’s about reflection and vision. Over the past 50 years, ECOWAS has grown to become one of the most effective regional communities in Africa. Known for its commitment to economic cooperation, peacebuilding, and regional integration, the bloc has achieved major milestones that have directly improved the lives of citizens in member countries.

ECOWAS’s decision to begin the 50th anniversary festivities in Ghana underscores the country’s pivotal role within the community. President Mahama’s involvement further elevates the importance of the event, as he is expected to deliver a powerful message about unity, development, and the future of regional cooperation.

Ahead of the grand launch, ECOWAS institutions have been actively planning to ensure that the celebration resonates beyond Ghana’s borders. In February 2025, the ECOWAS Administrative and Financial Committee met virtually to approve a comprehensive program of activities that will roll out across all member states throughout the year. The directive from the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government is clear: the 50th anniversary should be celebrated with full visibility and participation from every corner of the region.

The significance of this celebration goes beyond its symbolic meaning. It’s a reminder of how far the region has come—from the dreams of its founding fathers to the present-day initiatives that foster trade, peace, mobility, and economic empowerment. As Ghana takes the spotlight to open this year-long festivity, the event in Accra is poised to set the standard for all other member states to follow.

West Africa watches eagerly as Accra prepares to host a celebration that will not only honour the past but inspire the future.
