Black Stars footballers Mohammed Kudus and Kamaldeen Sulemana have extended their support to the upcoming 10th edition of the Sheikh Sharubutu Ramadan Cup, scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 19, 2025, in Accra. The two Ghanaian internationals, currently playing for West Ham United and Southampton respectively, donated a trophy, medals, and a cash prize of GH₵5,000 to be awarded to the winning team.
The gesture was warmly acknowledged by the organisers of the popular community football event. In a statement, they expressed deep gratitude to Kudus and Kamaldeen for their contribution, stating, “On behalf of the Chief Patron, the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, under whose auspices the tournament is held, we thank the players sincerely for their generous donation in honour of the Chief Imam.”
The Sheikh Sharubutu Ramadan Cup is an annual football gala that unites youth from over 30 Zongo communities across the country at the end of Ramadan. The tournament aims to promote peace, unity, and youth empowerment, while providing a platform for showcasing football talent within the Zongo community.
This year’s edition is particularly significant as it marks the 10th anniversary of the tournament. Organisers have dubbed it the “Champions Edition” and have invited only past winners, founding teams, and communities with outstanding records in the competition. In total, 15 teams will take part in this special one-day event at the historic Kawokudi Park in Accra.
Ashaiman, the defending champions and the most decorated team in the history of the tournament, will be seeking a fourth title. Their dominance over the years has made them a strong contender going into this celebratory edition.
By donating to the tournament, Kudus and Kamaldeen follow in the footsteps of other notable Ghanaian footballers like Rashid Sumaila and Andre Ayew, who have also supported the initiative in the past. Their contribution not only underscores their commitment to community development but also highlights the significance of the tournament as a cultural and sporting fixture in Ghana.
The organisers hope the 10th edition will be a vibrant celebration of youth talent and community spirit, further cementing the legacy of the Sheikh Sharubutu Ramadan Cup as more than just a football competition, but a symbol of unity and pride among Zongo communities.
