Serious Accident Involving Matis and VIP Bus at Kwahu Tafo Leaves One Dead, Several Injured

A tragic road accident occurred in the early hours of Friday, April 18, 2025, at Kwahu Tafo in the Eastern Region of Ghana, involving a Matis private car and a VIP branded long-distance bus. The incident, which took place around 6:30 a.m. near the Tafo Junction, has left one person dead and several others injured, including the driver of the Matis.

According to eyewitness accounts, the Matis car was traveling from Nkawkaw towards Kwahu Tafo at a high speed. The driver, in an attempt to overtake a long truck ahead of him, veered into the opposite lane without noticing the oncoming VIP bus that was headed toward Accra from Kumasi. The two vehicles collided head-on in a devastating crash that shook the entire community.

The impact of the collision caused the Matis to be completely mangled, trapping the two occupants inside. Bystanders rushed to the scene and attempted to rescue them before emergency services arrived. Sadly, the passenger in the Matis died on the spot due to the severity of the injuries sustained. The driver was pulled out with the help of metal cutters and other tools and was quickly rushed to the Holy Family Hospital in Nkawkaw, where he remains in critical condition.

The VIP bus, which had over 30 passengers on board, suffered major damage to its front section. Fortunately, most passengers escaped with minor injuries. However, three people, including the bus driver and two passengers seated near the front, sustained more serious injuries and were also transported to the hospital for further treatment. Medical personnel at the Holy Family Hospital have since confirmed that all injured individuals are receiving the necessary care.

The Ghana Police Service, together with officials from the National Road Safety Authority and the National Ambulance Service, arrived at the scene shortly after the crash. They coordinated rescue efforts, cleared the road for traffic, and began preliminary investigations into the cause of the accident. According to a police officer present, early indications point to reckless overtaking and excessive speeding as the likely causes.

Local residents, shocked by the accident, expressed concern about the increasing number of road crashes along the Kwahu Tafo stretch. “This road is known for its sharp curves and poor visibility in the early morning,” said Kofi Appiah, a taxi driver who witnessed the aftermath. “We’ve seen too many accidents here. Something must be done.”

Authorities have since cautioned drivers to avoid reckless overtaking and maintain appropriate speeds, especially on the hilly and curved roads within the Kwahu area. They have also urged transport operators to regularly inspect their vehicles and ensure their drivers are well-rested and attentive on the road.

As investigations continue, the body of the deceased passenger has been deposited at the Nkawkaw Government Hospital morgue for autopsy and identification, while police work to inform the victim’s family.

This unfortunate incident adds to the growing concern over road safety in Ghana, especially during the Easter season when road travel significantly increases in the Kwahu area due to festive activities.
