President John Dramani Mahama has called on African nations to capitalise on the shifting global economic dynamics, urging the continent to redefine its economic future. Speaking at the Kwahu Business Forum on Saturday, April 19, 2025, Mahama emphasised that Africa must look beyond traditional trading practices and actively engage in manufacturing, industrialisation, and entrepreneurship. He stressed that the changing global landscape presents a significant opportunity for African countries to assert themselves in the evolving world economy.
“The world is changing, and new opportunities are being thrown up. We, as a country, must take advantage of those opportunities,” Mahama stated during his speech at the forum. He pointed to the ongoing trade wars between major economic powers as one of the key factors driving global shifts in production. This situation, according to Mahama, presents a unique opportunity for African nations to establish a more prominent position on the world stage.
Reflecting on past global transitions, Mahama acknowledged that Africa has often missed out on the benefits of major geopolitical changes. From the Cold War to the era of globalisation, the continent has faced challenges in fully capitalising on global shifts. However, the President expressed optimism about Africa’s ability to benefit from the current geopolitical changes. He highlighted that the continent’s resources, both human and natural, could propel it toward a new economic era.
Mahama urged Africans to rethink their roles in the global economy. He encouraged bold ventures into agribusiness, digital entrepreneurship, and large-scale commercial farming. “We can be anything that we want,” Mahama confidently stated, emphasising the potential for African nations to diversify their economies and explore new growth areas.
The Kwahu Business Forum continues to be a crucial platform for policymakers, entrepreneurs, and investors. It provides an opportunity for stakeholders to discuss strategies that promote economic development, empowerment of the private sector, and entrepreneurship across Ghana and the entire African continent. The forum’s impact is growing, with increasing engagement from various sectors aimed at transforming Africa’s economic future.
Through such events, Mahama has repeatedly underscored the importance of embracing the opportunities presented by global shifts. His message is clear: Africa must take bold steps toward economic diversification and innovation, ensuring that the continent plays a central role in the evolving global economy.
As Africa continues to navigate the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century, President Mahama’s call for a new economic vision is a timely reminder of the continent’s untapped potential. The Kwahu Business Forum serves as an important vehicle for pushing these ideas forward, making it a pivotal event for all stakeholders committed to fostering growth and development across the continent.
