After a Rough Champions League Exit, Real Madrid Snatch Late Win Over Athletic Club

After a tough exit from the UEFA Champions League, Real Madrid returned to La Liga action against Athletic Club in a must-win match to keep pressure on league leaders Barcelona.

The defending La Liga champions have not had it easy this season. They’ve suffered defeats in two El Clásicos and were humiliated in the Champions League quarter-finals, losing 5-1 on aggregate.

Despite their struggles, Madrid came out strong against Athletic Club. They dominated the match with 22 total shots and four big chances created, while Athletic Club only managed three shots with no real threat. However, Real Madrid could only break the deadlock in stoppage time, thanks to a clutch goal from Fede Valverde in the 90+3rd minute.

The versatile midfielder, who played as a right-back in the game, scored with a long-range shot into the box. His goal sealed the much-needed 1-0 victory, but it also highlighted a key concern — Madrid’s poor finishing. With so many chances created and only one goal scored, it’s clear that their attack needs improvement.

This is especially important with the Copa del Rey final coming up on the 26th of April — another El Clásico against Barcelona. Madrid have already lost twice to Barca this season, and in a final, they simply can’t afford to waste chances.

What’s Next for Real Madrid?

Real Madrid are currently second in La Liga with 69 points, just four points behind leaders Barcelona, who have 73. While winning the league is still possible, it won’t be easy. Their best shot at silverware might be in the Copa del Rey, where they’ll face Barcelona in a high-stakes final.

Meanwhile, Barcelona are on track for a possible quadruple this season. They’re in great form and will be hoping to maintain their lead in the league and win the domestic cup. But Real Madrid still have the chance to spoil those plans.

For Madrid, every match matters now. If they want to end the season with a trophy and keep the fans happy, they’ll have to fix their finishing problem fast and take every chance they get — starting with that crucial final against Barcelona.
