Ghana’s Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed deep sorrow over the reported passing of Pope Francis, describing him as a beacon of compassion, peace, and humility whose legacy will endure for generations. In an emotional tribute shared on social media and through the Office of the Vice President, Bawumia joined millions around the world in mourning the spiritual leader of the Catholic Church.
> “Pope Francis was more than just a religious leader,” Bawumia wrote. “He was a symbol of hope, unity, and justice in a world often torn apart by division.”
Though Pope Francis never visited Ghana personally, his impact on the Ghanaian Catholic community was deeply felt. Under his leadership, the Church focused on global issues such as poverty, climate change, and inclusiveness—areas that resonate deeply with Ghana’s socio-political development goals.
Dr. Bawumia praised the Pope’s commitment to interfaith dialogue, especially in Africa, where religious tolerance plays a crucial role in maintaining peace. He noted that Pope Francis' consistent calls for understanding among Christians, Muslims, and people of other faiths made him a powerful figure of global harmony.
> “His Holiness reminded us that leadership is rooted in love, not power. He carried the burden of the world with a gentle heart,” the Vice President said.
Beyond religion, Pope Francis was a champion of the poor and marginalized. His visits to refugee camps, his advocacy for economic justice, and his open embrace of social reform made him a modern spiritual reformer. Bawumia highlighted how these qualities inspired leaders across the globe—including in Ghana—to lead with compassion and vision.
As news of the Pope’s passing spread, churches across Ghana held memorial Masses and prayer vigils. Many Ghanaians have also taken to social media to express their grief and gratitude for his spiritual leadership.
In closing his tribute, Bawumia called on Ghanaians to honor Pope Francis not only in words but also through actions that reflect his teachings—especially kindness, unity, and humility.
> “May his soul rest in perfect peace, and may his legacy inspire us all to build a more just and compassionate world,” he said.
The Vatican is expected to announce funeral arrangements soon, and Ghana’s government may send a delegation to represent the nation at the ceremony.
