The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have intensified their security operations in Bawku and its surrounding areas, including Binduri, amid a resurgence of ethnic clashes and gun violence. This escalation is part of a broader mandate to support civil authorities in restoring order in the restive northeastern town.

In a statement issued on Monday, the GAF confirmed that troops stationed at Binduri responded to sporadic gunfire in the early hours of the morning near the Binduri Central Market. The rapid response team, comprised of personnel from the 11 Mechanised Battalion and the Joint Task Force, supported by the Ghana Police Service, conducted cordon and search operations aimed at apprehending suspected gunmen.

During the operation, a suspected gunman was arrested and subsequently handed over to the police for further investigation. The troops also retrieved a cache of weapons and military gear, including an AK-47 rifle, a G3 rifle, 370 rounds of M16 and AK-47 ammunition, 128 rounds of G3 ammunition, an empty M16 rifle magazine, a machete, four fragmentation jackets, a pair of boots, and a helmet.

The GAF emphasized that these operations are carefully planned to rid Bawku of armed assailants and restore peace to the region. They urged residents and the general public to support ongoing efforts by cooperating with security personnel.

The Bawku conflict, rooted in longstanding chieftaincy disputes, has seen a resurgence in violence, leading to multiple deaths and heightened tensions in the area. In response, the government has imposed curfews and increased military presence to curb the violence.

In a bid to address the underlying issues, President John Dramani Mahama announced that the Otumfuo-led peace mediation process would resume next week. The mediation aims to bring together all stakeholders to discuss a roadmap towards lasting peace in Bawku.

The GAF's intensified operations, coupled with renewed mediation efforts, signal a comprehensive approach to resolving the Bawku conflict. As the situation develops, the cooperation of local communities and adherence to security measures remain crucial in restoring stability to the region.
