Ghanaian security forces have successfully thwarted a major cross-border ammunition smuggling operation in the Volta Region, averting what authorities describe as a significant threat to national and regional security. The operation, led by the Ghana Police Service in collaboration with border patrol units, took place near Aflao, a critical border town linking Ghana and Togo.
According to police sources, intelligence was gathered over several weeks following reports of suspicious movements along unapproved routes in the Ketu South Municipality. Acting swiftly, law enforcement officers intercepted a commercial vehicle suspected to be transporting contraband. Upon inspection, they discovered dozens of boxes filled with high-caliber bullets and firearm components, concealed beneath bags of foodstuffs.
Three suspects—two Ghanaian nationals and one foreigner—were arrested on the spot. They are currently assisting police with investigations to uncover the source and intended destination of the ammunition. Preliminary reports suggest the weapons were being transported from a neighboring country into Ghana for possible resale to criminal networks or militant groups.
The Volta Regional Police Commander, DCOP Andrews Boadu Ekumah, praised the intelligence team and field officers for their vigilance and professionalism. He emphasized the importance of cross-border cooperation in addressing illegal arms trade, which continues to fuel violence and insecurity in West Africa.
> “This operation sends a clear message that Ghana will not tolerate the smuggling of arms through its borders. We remain committed to safeguarding the peace and security of our citizens,” the commander stated.
The incident has raised renewed concerns about the vulnerability of Ghana’s porous borders, especially in light of ongoing political instability and terrorism threats in parts of the Sahel region. Security experts have long warned that Ghana could be a potential target for armed groups operating in neighboring countries if proactive measures are not taken.
Residents in the Volta Region have commended the police for the swift action, urging the government to tighten border surveillance and invest in more modern technology to monitor unapproved entry points.
As investigations continue, the Ghana Police Service has assured the public that all individuals involved in the smuggling network will be brought to justice. The authorities also called on the public to report any suspicious activities that may threaten the nation’s peace and stability.
