MTN Ghana has issued a strong warning to the public over a viral social media promotion falsely claiming that customers can “double their data” by dialing a specific code. The telecom giant has officially debunked the claim, describing it as fraudulent and misleading, and advised customers to disregard such messages.

According to a press release from the MTN Corporate Communications team, the scam involves a message circulating via WhatsApp and Facebook promising users double data packages if they dial a particular USSD code or follow a suspicious link. MTN says this message is not part of any current promotional offer and that no such bonus is available through unofficial platforms.

“We wish to inform our cherished customers that MTN Ghana has not launched any promotion called ‘Double Your Data’ via that method. This is a scam targeted at defrauding unsuspecting users,” the company stated.

The statement urged customers never to share their mobile money PINs, personal information, or account details under any circumstance. MTN stressed that all legitimate promotions are advertised through official channels, including the company’s website, verified social media pages, and SMS from recognized MTN shortcodes.

Cybersecurity analysts have also weighed in, warning that such scams are part of a growing trend of phishing attempts and social engineering tactics being used to gain unauthorized access to people’s data or money. The Ghana Cyber Security Authority has advised users to verify information before taking action and to report suspicious messages to their service providers.

MTN assured the public that it is working closely with law enforcement and cybersecurity agencies to trace the source of the scam and take appropriate legal action. The company also emphasized its commitment to protecting customers through continuous education, fraud alerts, and improved digital security.

In the meantime, customers are advised to stay alert and to use only official MTN shortcodes like *138# for data purchases or *170# for mobile money transactions. “Your data is valuable, and your safety online begins with you,” the statement concluded.

As internet usage and digital transactions increase, telecom users in Ghana must remain cautious and rely only on trusted sources for any promotional or service information.
