In a significant move to boost Nigeria’s aviation capacity and regional connectivity, the Federal Government has officially designated the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport in Lagos as an alternative gateway to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
The announcement was made on Tuesday by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, during a press briefing in Abuja. He explained that the decision is part of a broader strategy to decongest traffic at Abuja’s airport and enhance operational flexibility across the country’s major air travel hubs.
“This declaration is in line with our commitment to strengthen infrastructure, improve passenger experience, and ensure smoother air traffic flow, especially during emergencies or peak seasons,” Keyamo stated.
The Bola Tinubu International Airport, previously known as the Lagos International Airport, has recently undergone significant upgrades. These include the expansion of runways, improved terminal facilities, advanced security systems, and increased handling capacity for both passengers and cargo.
By recognizing it as a strategic alternative, the Federal Government hopes to ensure that air travel remains efficient and uninterrupted in the event of technical issues, bad weather, or security threats affecting Abuja’s airport operations.
The move also aligns with Nigeria’s long-term aviation development plan, which aims to elevate the country as a central hub in West Africa. Aviation stakeholders have praised the decision, noting that it could attract more international airlines and encourage private-sector investments in airport infrastructure.
Reacting to the news, some industry analysts noted that while this is a positive development, attention must also be given to improving other airports across the country to reduce over-reliance on Lagos and Abuja. Calls have also been made for better interconnectivity between regional airports and enhanced ground transportation.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government has assured travelers that necessary logistics and communication systems are already being put in place to ensure a seamless transition and coordination between both airports.
As Nigeria continues to modernize its aviation sector, this development marks another step toward improving air travel safety, accessibility, and efficiency.
