Pope Francis Dies at 88 from Stroke and Heart Failure

Pope Francis, the 266th head of the Roman Catholic Church, passed away on Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88. The Vatican confirmed in an official statement that he died at 7:35 a.m. local time at his residence in Casa Santa Marta, Vatican City. The cause of death was a cerebral stroke followed by a coma and irreversible heart failure, as detailed by Dr. Andrea Arcangeli, head of the Vatican’s health department.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis became the first pope from the Americas and the Southern Hemisphere. His papacy, which began in 2013 following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, was marked by a focus on humility, social justice, care for the environment, and outreach to the marginalized. His death marks the end of a significant era in the modern history of the Catholic Church.

The Vatican revealed that the late pontiff had been battling several underlying health conditions including type 2 diabetes and hypertension. Despite his health struggles, Pope Francis remained active in his duties, often addressing global issues and advocating for peace and compassion until his final days.

In line with his personal wishes, Pope Francis will be laid to rest at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. His burial site will be located between the Pauline Chapel and the Sforza Chapel, a testament to his devotion to Mary, the mother of Jesus, whom he often spoke about with affection during his papacy.

The body of Pope Francis was moved to St. Peter's Basilica on April 23, where it will lie in state until April 25. This period allows the faithful from around the world to pay their final respects to the beloved spiritual leader. Images of mourners lining up in Vatican City, offering prayers and flowers, have filled the media, reflecting the deep global sorrow over his passing.

His funeral is scheduled for April 26, 2025, and is expected to draw world leaders, clergy, and faithful Catholics from every continent. As the Church prepares to elect his successor, tributes continue to pour in from religious and political leaders alike, recognizing Pope Francis' legacy of humility, service, and hope.

His death is not only a moment of mourning for Catholics but also a global event, as the world bids farewell to one of the most influential and compassionate voices of the 21st century.
