Political analyst and former member of the House of Representatives, Dr. Usman Bugaje, has raised alarm over what he describes as the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)’s strategic use of money to weaken the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP). He warned that such practices pose a serious threat to Nigeria’s democratic future.
Speaking during a recent political forum in Abuja, Bugaje alleged that the APC has embarked on a campaign to financially influence and destabilize the PDP by luring its members with monetary incentives and political appointments. According to him, this trend not only undermines multi-party democracy but also signals a dangerous erosion of democratic values and checks and balances.
“The ruling party is turning Nigeria’s democracy into a one-party state by buying off opposition figures with money and power,” Bugaje said. “This is not just about politics — it’s about the survival of our democracy.”
Bugaje further noted that the mass defection of PDP members to the APC is not driven by ideology or a desire to serve the people, but rather by personal gain and political convenience. He criticized politicians who, in his words, “have sold their conscience for cash,” thereby weakening the capacity of the opposition to provide meaningful alternatives and hold the government accountable.
He also called on civil society organizations, the media, and citizens to speak out against the monetization of Nigeria’s political process. Bugaje emphasized that a strong and vibrant opposition is essential for the health of any democracy, as it ensures transparency, accountability, and policy debates.
“If we allow money politics to replace values and principles, we will have no democracy left,” he warned.
Reacting to Bugaje’s comments, some PDP members echoed his concerns, stating that the party is undergoing internal reforms to resist such external pressures. However, APC officials have dismissed the allegations, saying that defections to their party reflect the people’s confidence in the current administration.
As Nigeria prepares for upcoming elections, Bugaje’s remarks serve as a sobering reminder of the challenges facing the nation’s democratic institutions. The integrity of political parties, the role of money in politics, and the future of democratic opposition remain pressing issues in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
