Airtel Africa has entered into a strategic partnership with SpaceX to deploy Starlink’s high-speed satellite internet service across nine of its 14 African markets. The initiative is aimed at boosting internet access, especially in remote and underserved communities across the continent.

Announced on Monday, the collaboration is expected to significantly improve connectivity in areas where traditional infrastructure is limited. By combining Starlink’s advanced low-earth-orbit satellite technology with Airtel Africa’s existing ground infrastructure, the two companies aim to bridge Africa’s persistent digital divide.

The rollout will initially cover nine countries, including Nigeria, Kenya, and Zambia—where SpaceX has already secured operating licenses. Applications are pending in the remaining five markets. The partnership will focus on reaching enterprises, healthcare centers, schools, and rural populations that currently lack consistent and reliable internet access.

Airtel Africa emphasized the transformative nature of the collaboration, calling it a “game-changer for digital inclusion.” The telecom giant also hinted at further integration with SpaceX to explore new ways to expand and enhance connectivity across its footprint.

Airtel Africa’s Managing Director and CEO, Sunil Taldar, expressed the company’s commitment to improving digital access across the continent. “This partnership with SpaceX demonstrates our unwavering dedication to strengthening Africa’s digital economy through meaningful investments. Satellite technology like Starlink’s will ensure that even the most isolated communities gain access to essential voice and data services,” he said.

Chad Gibbs, SpaceX’s Vice President of Starlink Business Operations, shared similar enthusiasm. “We are thrilled to join forces with Airtel to bring the benefits of Starlink to more Africans. Airtel has been instrumental in shaping Africa’s telecom landscape, and our partnership will only strengthen our shared goal of widespread internet access,” he noted.

The agreement is expected to benefit Airtel’s 163 million customers, particularly in markets like Ghana, Zimbabwe, and Cape Verde, where demand for reliable internet is growing rapidly in sectors such as education, commerce, and healthcare.
