In a bold and decisive move to clamp down on crime, the Eastern South Regional Police Command has apprehended a suspect for unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition in the Nsawam-Adoagyiri municipality. The arrest occurred on the evening of Thursday, 23rd May 2025, during a well-coordinated police operation targeting key entry and exit points of Adoagyiri following a series of disturbances that have unsettled the area in recent weeks.
The individual arrested has been identified as Abdul Rauf Salami, a resident of the Adoagyiri Zongo community. According to the police, Salami was taken into custody at approximately 9:30 p.m. during an intensified security operation intended to restore peace and stability in the municipality. The police action forms part of broader efforts to curb illegal arms circulation and ensure the safety of residents.
During the operation, police officers retrieved two pump-action guns, 64 rounds of AA ammunition, a cutlass, a knife, and an ammunition vest in the suspect’s possession. These items were carefully documented and taken into police custody as evidence to support the ongoing investigation. The nature and quantity of the weapons found suggest a potential threat to public safety, prompting swift and firm action by law enforcement.
ASP Foster Owusu, speaking on behalf of the Regional Police Public Affairs Unit, expressed confidence in the operation’s outcome and reassured residents that the police remain committed to maintaining order and security. He stated that Abdul Rauf Salami is currently assisting investigators as they work to uncover the full scope of the matter and determine whether the suspect has ties to any organised crime networks or activities in the region.
“We will leave no stone unturned in ensuring the safety and security of the Adoagyiri Township,” ASP Owusu assured, urging residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies. He also encouraged the public to report any suspicious movements or behaviour that could endanger the peace the police are working tirelessly to uphold.
The Eastern Region has experienced sporadic incidents of violence and unrest in some municipalities, prompting regional security forces to heighten their presence and implement stricter monitoring protocols. This recent arrest represents a crucial step in those efforts, and the Police Command has affirmed that similar operations will continue as needed.
The suspect is expected to be formally charged and arraigned before a competent court soon. Legal processes will follow to determine the outcome of the case, and justice will be pursued in accordance with the law.
Authorities continue to appeal to the public to support the campaign against the proliferation of illegal weapons and to contribute to the collective mission of preserving peace and development in Ghana’s Eastern Region.
