The Ghana Football Association’s Disciplinary Committee (GFA DC) has ruled in favor of Basake Holy Stars, awarding them three points and three goals following a protest against Nations FC for fielding an unqualified player during a Division One League fixture. The ruling, which comes after a thorough review of the match and relevant documentation, has led to significant implications for the league standings and disciplinary actions for Nations FC.
Basake Holy Stars lodged a formal complaint, citing that Nations FC had used a player who was either improperly registered or ineligible to participate in the fixture. After careful consideration, the GFA DC upheld the protest, confirming that the player in question did not meet the eligibility criteria for the match. In accordance with Article 33(1)(e) of the GFA Regulations, the committee awarded the match to Basake Holy Stars by default.
In addition to forfeiting the match, Nations FC has been sanctioned further. The GFA DC imposed a fine of GH₵1,250 on Nations FC and ordered that the club expunge any accumulated points from the said match. Furthermore, the player involved has been suspended pending further investigation, and the club risks facing additional disciplinary measures should any further breaches be uncovered.
The ruling significantly boosts Basake Holy Stars’ standing in the Division One League table, improving their chances in the tight race for promotion. The GFA DC reiterated its commitment to ensuring the integrity of Ghanaian football by enforcing rules strictly and impartially.
“The Disciplinary Committee’s decision serves as a strong reminder to all clubs to adhere strictly to player registration and eligibility requirements,” the statement from the GFA emphasized.
Nations FC has the right to appeal the ruling within the stipulated time frame set out in GFA regulations. As the league season nears its conclusion, this decision could have lasting implications on promotion and relegation outcomes, adding to the mounting pressure on clubs to maintain regulatory compliance.
The GFA has urged all participating clubs to ensure diligence in administrative and regulatory matters to avoid similar sanctions.
