Former Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahen, has launched a scathing critique against the leadership of the party, asserting that it has failed to learn from its past mistakes. Speaking in a heated interview on June 18, 2025, Boahen expressed grave concern over what he described as a lack of introspection, accountability, and direction within the ruling party.
Boahen fumed. His comments come at a time when internal wrangling, accusations of favoritism, and grassroots dissatisfaction have intensified ahead of the December 2024 general elections.
Boahen’s criticisms tap into growing public and internal sentiment that the NPP may be losing touch with the very principles and people that once gave it a commanding political lead. According to him, the party's current trajectory could severely impact its performance in the upcoming elections if urgent reforms are not made.
The veteran lawyer also warned that disunity, poor communication, and alienation of the party base are becoming chronic issues that the leadership appears unwilling to address.
Obiri Boahen further urged the NPP’s National Executive Committee to conduct a thorough internal audit—not just of finances, but of policies, campaign strategies, and candidate selections. He insisted that a failure to reconnect with the grassroots and correct missteps from the 2020 electoral cycle could spell disaster in the tightly contested 2024 presidential race.
Many political analysts view Boahen’s remarks as a wake-up call for the NPP. With just months to the 2024 elections, the party faces mounting pressure to resolve internal disputes and rekindle public trust.
As Ghanaians prepare to head to the polls, the question remains: Will the NPP heed Obiri Boahen’s call for change, or will it continue down a path that could cost it political power?
