Bawumia’s Support Crumbling? Kwasi Kwarteng Mocks Drop in MP Endorsements Ahead of NPP Primaries

Kwasi Kwarteng, a former Public Relations Officer at the Ministry of Education and now an active supporter of Kennedy Agyapong’s presidential campaign, has taken a swipe at the camp of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. According to Kwarteng, Bawumia's once-dominant backing within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has significantly diminished over time.

Kwarteng claims that Bawumia, who previously boasted the backing of 137 Members of Parliament (MPs), is now struggling to rally even half that number. In a post shared on social media platform X, he questioned the credibility of recent claims made by Bawumia's team.

“Funny how the same group that once proudly claimed the endorsement of 137 MPs, nearly every government appointee, and party executive at all levels, now finds itself scrambling to convince us they have the support of over 60 MPs—based on a video clip where barely 25 people can be seen in the room,” he wrote. He ended the post with the words: “Time really does change things.”

Kwarteng’s remarks come just after reports that more than 60 NPP MPs have publicly pledged their loyalty to Dr. Bawumia, the former Vice President and the party’s 2024 flagbearer.

These MPs recently paid him a courtesy call, where they expressed their commitment to supporting his continued leadership ambitions.

Speaking after the closed-door meeting, Dr. Bawumia acknowledged the endorsement, describing it as a significant moment. “I had a very encouraging visit this morning from some of our party’s MPs. It was both a courtesy call and an expression of their support,” he stated.

He went on to note that the group represents more than 60 out of the NPP’s 88 MPs, calling it a powerful endorsement. “This support from Parliament means a lot. MPs have deep influence in their constituencies, and I am truly grateful for their confidence in my leadership,” Bawumia added. “There’s still a lot of work ahead to strengthen the party and serve Ghana better, but moments like this give us hope and motivation.”

Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party has announced that it will hold its presidential primaries on January 31, 2026, setting the stage for what is likely to be a competitive race for the party’s top slot.

Among those vying for the NPP’s presidential nomination are key figures such as Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, former Minister of Food and Agriculture Bryan Acheampong, and former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum. The internal contest is already generating strong opinions across party lines, with alliances forming and political strategies unfolding.

As the primaries draw closer, the internal dynamics of the NPP will continue to take center stage, especially with top-tier contenders battling to shape the party’s future direction and appeal to

delegates nationwide.
