FREE SHS IN ITS CURRENT STATE IS A DISSERVICE – PROF. ADDAE-MENSAH

Professor Ivan Addae-Mensah, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, believes that the current situation of the free senior high school (SHS) program is a disservice to the country.

One of the government's signature programs, according to Prof. Addae-Mensah, is depleting the economy and rendering it ineffective.

Prof Addae-Mensah disclosed to JoyNews' Benjamin Akakpo on the AM Show that he advised the ruling party of the faults of its strategy in 2012 and 2016.

His views, though, were regarded as "incompatible with the President's purpose," he said.

However, he now feels justified because "some of those who believed what I was saying was too far-fetched are not the same folks singing the tune I've been singing."

Conversations on Free SHS erupted last week when the government announced no review policy.  The Free Senior High School program was a key campaign promise made by then-candidate Nana Akufo-Addo in 2016, and it has since become an important part of the educational system.

There have been calls for the program to be reviewed because it is not sustainable and has become a drain on the government's budget, despite the fact that the economy is in a state of crisis.

Meanwhile, Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has pledged that the government will not "pull down" the government's flagship Free Senior High School (SHS) program.

This came after Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah announced that the government's 16 flagship programs will be reviewed soon to guarantee that their goals are met.

To address the shortfall, the former Vice-Chancellor recommended that the government "allow those who can afford pay, and whatever they contribute will go."
