The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has denied any plans for a coup.

Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, the NDC's National Chairman, has stated that the party and its members are democratic and will not take any action that will jeopardize the 1992 Constitution.

During a speech in Accra recently, the Dean of the University of Ghana School of Law, Prof. Raymond Atuguba, raised concern about Ghana's current financial situation as a threat to the country's democracy.

"In this country, we do not want a coup. "However, I am concerned that if we do not move swiftly, we may soon have one on our hands," he warned.

Since then, the law professor has been roundly chastised for his remarks, which have been interpreted as fertile ground for a coup. Mr. Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, speaking to the Executives of the NDC's USA Chapter in Boston over the weekend, emphasized that the party has no such plans.

"We conceived and gave birth to the Constitution of 1992. Those who are now rushing to the Supreme Court to protect the Constitution did so by fleeing the Constituent Assembly, which enacted the 1992 Constitution. "We are the ones who gave birth to that constitution, and we will be the last to do anything to destroy that constitutional system," he said.

Rather, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo stated that the NDC would use the democratic process of electing a new government to express its dissatisfaction with the current state of governance in Ghana.
