KEY TERMS
HIV - Human Immunodeficiency virus
HTLV - Human T-Lymohotropic virus
Virion : The entire virus particle which consists of an inner core of nucleic acid and an outer protein shell called capsid.
Retroviruses: These are virus which have RNA as their genetic material. They replicate and express their genome through a DNA intermediate.
Provirus: This is a term used to describe a viral DNA that is integrated into a host cell
cDNA: A complementary DNA generated from an RNA template and the process is catalyzed by the enzyme reverse transcriptase
The retroviruse has two proteins a reverse transcriptase and an integrase. This virus uses the protein reverse transcriptase to produce a double stranded DNA using their genomic RNA as template after infecting the host cell.
The DNA generated is integrated into the host's DNA by the virus using the protein integrase leading to establiment of a provirus. The integrated provirus becomes a permanent component of the host's DNA and whenever the host's DNA replicates, the viral DNA also replicates
Examples of retroviruses.
HIV AND HTLV
Examples of retroviral drugs
Retonavir, nelfinavir, indinavir
