A 34-year-old man was remanded in police custody last Friday by a Tamale High Court presided over by Justice Richard Kogyapwa for unlawful possession of fire arms.

The accused, Mohammed Issah alias "waters," did not enter a plea and will return to court on April 25.

The prosecutor, Northern Regional Chief State Attorney Salia Abdul-Quddus, asked the court to remand the accused in police custody so that he could assist with further investigations.

However, the accused's counsel, Ibrahim Yussif, requested bail, but the court denied the request.

Facts

According to the evidence stated in court, the suspect was apprehended on Thursday, April 8, this year at a snap check station at Pigu on the Tamale-Bolgatanga Highway during a normal police intelligence operation.

He was thought to have sneaked the weaponry from Togo through Cinkasse on his route to Tamale, the regional capital.

The cops searched the car and discovered six 9mm Calibre Bruni handguns hidden in a package he had covered with a smock.

Police also found a dagger in his possession. Commendation

Meanwhile, the Police Administration praised the Northern Regional Police Command, particularly the squad participating in this operation, in a statement.

While reminding the public of its commitment to providing a safe and secure environment for all, the police have asked the public to continue providing leads to help them fight crime.
