The government has limited the export of maize and soya beans from the nation, two crucial commodities in the poultry sub-sector.

It is part of a plan to improve local poultry and cattle production and assure food security.

This is in response to a request from the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MoTI) to limit their export in order to ensure the supply of the subsidized commodity.

Last Friday, a senior source at the PPRSD informed the Daily Graphic that the MoTI directive meant the directorate could no longer issue fresh certificates.

Ghana's exports of the goods are restricted to Niger, Sierra Leone, the Republic of Congo, the United Kingdom, Qatar, the United States, Italy, and Canada under the order.

The PPRSD, a directorate of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA), certifies agricultural exports in small and big amounts.

New accreditation

"For us (PPRSD), the directive implies that we cannot give any certificates, but for the soya bean, an exporter must be approved under L.I. 2432 before we can offer the exporter certification to export," the source explained.

The Export and Import – Restrictions on Soya Bean Exportation, Regulation 2020 (L.I. 2432) is overseen by the Soya Bean Export Permit Committee, a seven-member regulatory task force.

As a result, the Plant Protection and Regulatory Services Directorate (PPRSD) has ceased granting phytosanitary certifications for both commodities' export.
