MOST GHANAIANS UNAWARE OF OIL FUNDED PROJECTS – PIAC

According to a public forum hosted by the Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC) in the Western North and North East areas, most Ghanaians are ignorant of initiatives sponsored with oil revenues.

The Committee held regional public forums on the PIAC Annual Report for 2021 in both regions, bringing together stakeholders from the traditional council, religious groups, security agencies, traders, and educational institutions, among others, to discuss the management and use of petroleum revenues.

More initiatives should be funded with petroleum earnings, according to the participants. As a result, PIAC recommends that projects supported under the Annual Budget Funding Amount (ABFA) be labeled for identification.

It reaffirmed its commitment to fulfilling its responsibility of ensuring the appropriate administration and use of Ghana's petroleum income.

PIAC applauds certain oil-funded initiatives but is critical of others.

The Committee expressed satisfaction with some of the projects supported with petroleum revenues, while criticizing others and urging immediate action to complete them.

The projects were inspected from Sunday, April 24th to Friday, April 29th, 2022.

The Committee observed the building of a three-story Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) Administration Block in Sefwi Wiawso, three Senior Staff Bungalows in Sefwi Wiawso, and a rural market in Amoaya in the Bodi Constituency in the Western North Region.

Members of the Committee expressed their delight at the project's completion, commissioning, and utilization.

The Senior Staff Bungalows, which got a total of GH1,779,660 from the ABFA in 2020, were also praised by the Committee.

The project was said to be 90% finished, with bungalows constructed and roofed, interior finishing nearly complete, and outside work still proceeding.

The Committee once again praised the improvement of the Nalerigu – Gbintri route in the North East, which received a $20 million ABFA grant in 2020. It was also inspected by the PIAC team and Ghana Highway Authority authorities.
