The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has been chosen to chair the Climate Sensitive Forum (CVF), an international collaboration of nations that are very vulnerable to global warming, on Wednesday, May 25, 2022.

Following Bangladesh's two-year stint as Chair of the Forum, President Akufo-Addo takes over as Chair. The Forum functions as a South-South co-operation forum for member states to cooperate together to address global climate change.

In his remarks, the President praised Bangladesh and, in particular, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for their leadership over the previous two years on the thorny problem of global climate change.

"Your leadership of the Climate Vulnerable Forum and the V20 is a credit to Bangladesh and a service to all vulnerable countries." "Ghana is honoured to take up the Chair of the Climate Vulnerable Forum, and will do everything she can to defend the world's most climate-vulnerable nations," he added.

Climate change, which the President described as "the greatest threat to the realization of the SDGs," has become a source of grave concern for leaders around the world, particularly for those of us who are classified as vulnerable nations, because it has a significant impact on the fundamentals required for our survival on this planet.

"We have a fundamental obligation to adopt quick, bold, and meaningful actions to stop the global climate from warming beyond unacceptable limits for the sake of our and future generations," he added.

"It is for this reason that Ghana will follow in the footsteps of the CVF's prior presidents in providing a voice for the voiceless," the President concluded. Ghana, as Chair of the CVF, would press major emitters to enhance their 2030 mitigation plans in order to meet the 1.5-degree Celsius objective, which is critical for our existence."

As Chair of the Forum, President Akufo-Addo said that Ghana will prioritize increasing adaptation funds and assisting in the unlocking of the Loss and Damage Fund, which will compensate vulnerable developing nations for losses and damages caused by climate change.

"Excellencies, we will not only endeavor to make the Charter of the CVF Global Parliamentary Group a reality, but we will also work to grow CVF membership, particularly in Africa." When Ghana assumes the presidency of the V20 Ministers of Finance of the CVF later this year, we will continue to champion all of the V20 Group's key priorities, such as unlocking finance for climate action, closing the financial protection gap, and working for a more equitable global financial system.

President Akufo-Addo stated that "we will push forward this crucial plan" while Bangladesh develops its own Climate Prosperity Plan. As we aspire to emerge rich, we intend to take strong climate policies that make sense for our growth."

Ghana's resolve to "work promptly on our own ambitious Climate Prosperity Plan" was underlined by him. We urge all global partners to fully support this progress, as well as the realization of our vulnerable countries' brave efforts to establish prosperity programs."
