FREEZING OF SIR JOHN’S ASSETS IN ORDER – CDD

The decision by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to freeze the assets of the late CEO of the Forestry Commission, Sir John, has been hailed by the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD)-Ghana.

Dr. Kojo Asante, CDD's Director of Policy and Advocacy, feels the move is necessary.

According to him, the step will provide the institution enough time to complete its inquiry.

He praised the Special Prosecutor for taking such a brave step on Joy FM's Midday News.

"I believe that is appropriate since it allows the office to study the property and other items that have been obtained in its own time." "You must keep in mind that the estate also contains property bought in the names of businesses, and we have no idea who the beneficiaries of these companies are." So there's a lot to work out, and I believe this is the best course of action."

According to a JoyNews check earlier today, Thursday, June 2, the OSP has frozen Sir John's bank accounts and all of his assets.  The move is part of the office's ongoing inquiry into the acquisition of state lands and properties mentioned in his will.

Background

On Sunday, May 22, it was revealed that Sir John's will included several land parcels in the Achimota Forest Reserve and the Sakumono Ramsar site.

It also comprised four pieces of property in the Achimota Forest, consisting of defined and unnamed acres, which the late politician gifted to specific individuals.

Parts of the will also include large quantities of money in his domestic and international accounts.

As a response of the public outcry, the OSP announced in a press release on Thursday, May 26 that it has launched an inquiry into the incident.Parts of the will also include large quantities of money in his domestic and international accounts.
