SaCut Denis Amenga-Etego, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), believes it's completely unacceptable to hold a protest against the government using firearms.
If the organizers are permitted to proceed, he believes the 'June 4 'armed' demo' would take on a new aspect.
Some leaders of the pressure organization #FixtheCountry are requesting permission to stage a three-day demonstration against Akufo-administration Addo's beginning June 4th.
To secure the marchers, the organization had warned authorities that they would be employing their own security people and would be armed.
However, SaCut Denis Amenga-Etego, who had previously joined the organization and demonstrated with them, does not appear to approve their projected 'armed demo.'
When we aim to win the hearts and minds of the people against a tyrannical regime, "arms" takes on a new connotation," he told the group in a statement copied to Peacefmonline.com.
"The pen is mightier than the rifle," he adds. Aren't these ostensibly intelligent people aware of this? Or were they simply perplexed for a moment?"
Read the following statement.
Fixing the Country With Conviction's "Arms"
Mr. Kwesi Pratt and his colleagues, who wined and dined with the world's most radical leftists from Cuba to Bolivia to Iran and learnt their methods of social and political mobilization for political action, never considered staging a "armed protest" on Ghana's streets.
Clearly, they were aware of the people's mood and their acceptable ways of action. They were not in the least bit perplexed. That's why they had such a large following, at least until they vanished from the streets and took up residence in studios.
Political activity necessitates strategic thought in collaboration with the general public. When a movement's strategic political purpose is unclear, the movement is relegated to a vehicle for misdirected self-promotional gimmicks.
When it comes to winning the hearts and minds of the people against a despotic government, "arms" takes on a new meaning.
We must be "equipped" with a strong sense of moral conviction. Armed with sociological and scientific research and investigation instruments, they can determine the precise mood of the people at any given time, as well as the government's current afflictions. The truth must be "armed" with us.
We need to have a moral high ground as well. To put it another way, the leaders of any street movement are more appealing to the public than firearms.
The pen is more powerful than a rifle. Aren't these ostensibly intelligent people aware of this? Or were they simply perplexed for a little moment?
The use of street protest as a technique for psychological warfare aims to destabilize the dominant mentality, which is based on "manufactured consent," by exposing the flaws of government and taking the people along in an effort to awaken the spirit and sense of people-power among the masses.
The ultimate goal is "mass opposition" to the status quo. The resistance of a man leads to a dead end.
I and many others were on the street with #FixTheCountry organizers the last time to contribute our "arms" of a collective voice to the establishment's overwhelming resistance.
