Kwesi Pratt, Editor-in-Chief of the Insight newspaper, has accused the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the FixtheCountry conveners' actions about their letter to the Ghana Police Service.
The organizers requested permission to hold a "armed" demonstration on June 4th in a letter to the police, but both their request and their demonstration were denied.
"We will bring our own security firm to give safety to protestors," the organization wrote in the letter. All firearms carried by protestors or contracted security personnel will be for personal protection only, and will be permissible under the Arms and Ammunitions Act of 1972. (NRCD 9) g) Proposed route and destination: We anticipate that the Demonstrators will follow the proposed route and destination.
"The procession will proceed from Circle to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, where the protestors will demand a slot on GTV to speak directly to the nation and lay out our grievances, in accordance with Article 55(11), which guarantees Ghanaians a fair opportunity to present their programs to the public through equal access to the state-owned media," they added.
The Ghana Police Service has obtained a court order prohibiting the planned protest.
"The Court granted an injunction to stop the organisers, their agents, assigns, and whomever is claiming via them from going on the armed protest as had been anticipated," the Police said in a statement on Friday after hearing the application.
According to Mr. Kwesi Pratt, the NPP cannot be blamed if a group has formed today and is asking to go on a march without police protection.
According to him, the NPP's development of its "Invisible Forces" motivated the organization to pursue private security.
When individuals objected to the concept, he referred to members of the NPP supporting the Invisible Forces' operations.
"I can't blame them all by myself." Let's be honest. What did they say when our New Patriotic Party colleagues formed the Invisible Forces and we spoke out against it? They claim they have lost faith in the police and want to defend themselves.
Isn't this exactly what these individuals are saying? "We've heard this 'we have no faith in the police' for a long time; it's not only FixtheCountry folks saying it," he remarked.
