The Chairman of Parliament's Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee, Kwame Anyimadu Antwi, has stated that the Minority cannot hold him responsible for completing his job properly.
The Minority in Parliament accused the Chairman of the Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee of delaying the passage of the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill 2021 on purpose.
He fiercely denied the assertion, explaining that, despite the fact that the Bill's passage has been postponed, the Committee is still working on it so that it may be brought before Parliament and passed.
Kwame Anyimadu Antwi stated that the Committee just conducted a public hearing on the proposed Bill and would now proceed to analyze the Bill chapter by clause before submitting its report to the plenary.
"I am dissatisfied with the statements spoken by Honourable Muntaka. He was the Chairman of the Health Committee, and no one interfered with his work when a bill was referred to him... We had concluded the public hearing and were now ready to go on.
"Now we'll wrap up the in-camera session and move on to clause-by-clause review of the Bill, following which we'll provide our report to the plenary...On Joy FM's Top Story on Wednesday, June 8, Kwame Anyimadu Antwi remarked, "He will not criticise me for performing my job right, he cannot fault me."
The Asante-Akim Central MP responded to the Minority's claim that the Committee had missed the three-month deadline set out in Article 106 (14) and Standing Orders 136 for committees to work on a bill by saying that the Minority's argument is flawed because the Bill was not introduced by the President.
"What Honourable Muntaka is stating is incorrect. A measure filed in Parliament by or on behalf of the President may not be delayed in any committee of Parliament for more than three months, according to Article 106 (14) of the Constitution. Which president is he referring to when he says this measure was introduced?
"I shall follow the law... I will not be pressured, and I will not be compelled to do anything I am not supposed to do... Anyimadu Antwi stated, "We must take our time to enact a legislation that will stand the test of time, not what Honourable Muntaka wishes to see, and I will not yield to his pressure."
If the Chairman of the Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee, Kwame Ayimadu Antwi, continues to postpone the passing of the Anti-LGBT Bill, the NDC Minority in Parliament has vowed to obstruct the presentation of any bill by the Executive.
According to Minority Chief Whip Alhaji Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, the Chairman of the Committee is purposefully delaying the passage of the Anti-LGBTQI Measure, so they [the Minority] would continue to oppose any bill placed before the House by the Executive.
"I can promise you that any other law submitted in the House would be met with opposition, even if it is to give water," Alhaji Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka remarked.
